Card and activity settings

Each card type in the builder comes with its own set of settings, accessible through a toolbar located above the Student Action and Prompt sections. This toolbar offers various configuration options that allow you to customize each card according to your needs.

Before diving into the specific settings for each card type, let's review three common features available across all card types:

  1. Card Type Selector:
  2. Located on the left side of the toolbar, this dropdown menu allows you to switch between different card types—such as Repeat, Multiple Choice, Respond, and Media Page—without losing the prompt or any content you've already entered. This ensures a smooth transition if you decide to change the card type after adding content.
  1. Add Media:
  2. The "Add Media" button allows you to insert a media area next to the Student Action. This feature lets you enrich your card with images, videos, audio, documents, or other types of content, which can be an essential part of the learning experience. Clicking this button opens a menu where you can choose the type of media to add.
  1. Points Adjustment:
  2. This simple yet crucial setting lets you determine the number of points a card is worth. You can increase or decrease the points using the up and down arrows, allowing you to weight each card according to its importance in the activity.

These common settings provide a consistent user experience across different card types, ensuring that you can easily manage and customize your activity regardless of the specific card type you're working with. Now, let's explore the unique settings available for each card type.

Repeat Card Settings

The Repeat Card includes various settings that allow you to customize the pronunciation and comprehension tasks for your students. Below is an overview of each setting and how it functions.

Record Pronunciation

The Record Pronunciation feature lets you capture the word or phrase for your students to practice. You can either:

  • Record the pronunciation manually by clicking the Record button.
  • Use the AI-generated pronunciation if you prefer an automated approach.

This recording becomes the reference for students to match their pronunciation.

Translation

The Translation tool automatically translates the prompt you’ve entered. Here’s how it works:

  • Click on the Translation icon to view the translated text.
  • Verify or edit the translation as needed. It uses Google Translate, so it provides you with an initial suggestion that you can accept or reject.

This feature helps ensure that students understand the phrase's meaning.

Repeat Count

The Repeat setting allows you to determine how many times a student needs to repeat the phrase to earn full credit. This can be adjusted by:

  • Using the up and down arrows next to the Repeat option.

This ensures that students get enough practice with each phrase.

Additional Options (Three Dots Menu)

Clicking the Three Dots Menu opens additional settings specific to the Repeat Card:

  • Add Explanation: Provide extra context or details about the word/phrase. This helps students understand its usage or significance.
  • Target Language: Set the language in which the translation and pronunciation are based, ensuring alignment with your lesson’s focus.

Explanation and Translation Display

After you add an explanation and translation, they are shown together, providing a comprehensive understanding of the phrase.

  • Explanation: Adds context or additional details about the phrase.
  • Translation: Shows the phrase in the student's native language.

This combined view is valuable for students as they learn both the meaning and correct pronunciation.

Multiple Choice (M.C.) Card Settings

Allow Retries

The Allow Retries option enables students to retry a question if they answer it incorrectly. This setting can be toggled on or off depending on whether you want students to have multiple attempts for that particular card.

  • How it works: If enabled, students can try again until they select the correct answer, making it ideal for practice modes.
  • Accessing this setting: Click on the three dots (Settings) menu and toggle the Allow Retries switch to your preference.

Respond Card Settings

The Respond Card includes several settings that allow you to customize the grading and feedback options for student responses. Below are the key settings available:

Auto-Grade Switch

The Auto-Grade switch enables automatic evaluation of student responses. When activated, it reveals the Auto-Grading tab, which offers two grading methods: Pass / Fail and Rubric-Based.

Pass / Fail Grading

  • Description: This grading method uses basic criteria to determine if the student's response is sufficient. It focuses on clarity, conciseness, and the relevance of the response to the prompt.
  • Example: A student’s response must clearly answer the teacher's prompt, even if there are minor grammatical errors that do not affect the overall understanding.

Rubric-Based Grading

  • Description: This method uses a detailed rubric to assess the student's response based on multiple criteria. It allows for a more nuanced evaluation of complex responses.
  • Custom Rubrics: You can create or refine a rubric to suit your grading needs, focusing on aspects like grammar, relevance, and completeness.

Rubric Settings Example

  • Example Rubric: The Speakable Standard World Language Rubric evaluates short answers in a world language class, focusing on grammar, relevance to the question, and overall completeness.
  • Points Distribution: Points are assigned based on the student's performance in each category (Grammar, Relevance, Completeness).

Feedback Options

The Feedback menu allows you to configure the type of feedback provided to students. Here are the available options:

  • Grammar Insights: Identify grammar errors in the student's response and provide explanations for each, helping students understand their mistakes.
  • Suggested Response: Offer a grammatically improved version of the student's response as a suggestion.
  • ACTFL Level: Estimate the student's proficiency level based on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) guidelines.
  • AI Feedback Language: Choose the language in which the AI provides feedback. This setting helps tailor the feedback to the student’s preferred language.

Three-Dot Menu (Additional Settings)

The Three-Dot Menu provides additional settings that allow you to fine-tune the Respond Card:

  • Allow Retries: Enable or disable the option for students to retry the question if they answer incorrectly.
  • Target Language: Set the language that will be used as the target for the student's response.

AI Context

The AI Context feature allows educators to attach additional information (like images, videos, or text) to help the AI better evaluate student responses. This ensures more accurate grading and feedback.

Configuring Activity Settings

The Settings allow you to configure the overall parameters for your activity. This tab is divided into the following sections:

  1. General Settings:
    • Activity Name: Set the name of your activity. This is how it will appear in your dashboard and for students
    • Description: Optionally, add a brief description of the activity to provide context or instructions.
    • Target Language: Select the primary language in which the activity is conducted.
    • Native Languages: Specify the native languages of your students. This setting can be used to automatically translate the activity content if needed.
    • Public Activity: Toggle this option to make your activity accessible to other users on the platform.
  2. Repeat Settings:
    • Default Voice (Text-to-Speech): Choose the default TTS voice for repeat cards. If the chosen language is not supported, it will default to the device's native text-to-speech option.
    • Repeat: Set the number of times students must repeat each term for full credit. For example, if set to 2, students must repeat the term twice to complete the card.
    • Leniency: Adjust the leniency for speech recognition. A more lenient setting will make the recognition more forgiving.
  3. Respond Settings:
    • Allow Retries: In practice mode, enable this option to allow students to retry if they get a response wrong. If this is disabled, students will not be able to retry their responses.
  4. M.C. (Multiple Choice) Settings:
    • Allow Retries: Similar to Respond settings, this option allows students to retry multiple choice questions in practice mode if they select the wrong answer. Disabling this will prevent retries.
